IEC 62061 and ISO 13849-1 (under revision) specify requirements for the design and implementation of safety-related control systems of machinery. The use of either of these standards, in accordance with their scopes, can be presumed to fulfil the relevant essential safety requirements.

This training course addresses how EN ISO 13849-1 (the safety-related control systems standard) is applied in automation and equipment design. In addition, we introduce you to the requirements resulting from the EN/IEC 62061 standard. In 2007, EN 954-1 was replaced by two new standards – EN ISO 13849-1 and IEC 62061 – designed to deal with the changing technologies: EN ISO 13849-1 addresses the safety of all system technologies including mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic products. A central part of EN ISO 13849-1:2008 is to choose an appropriate category for the identified safety functions. Categories were used also in the earlier machinery safety standard EN 954-1:1996. The report describes in detail the meaning of each category and also gives an example of a category 2 safety function.
