Scaffolding is tied to the work of the psychologist Lev Vygotsky, who is well known for several important contributions to educational theory. Vygotsky coined the term, “zone of proximal development.” A student's zone of proximal development is based on that student’s current developmental level and potential developmental level. Vygotsky and classroom strategies Lev Vygotsky’s focus on scaffolding has been particularly interesting for me as I progressed through the foundations of education. Face to face classes have shown me Vgotsky’s influence in the classroom and I have enjoyed researching his theory of the zone of proximal development.

In this first part of a two part article on scaffolding, author Mike King will explain the differences in meta-cognitive scaffolding and student support scaffolding in traditional classrooms. Scaffolding and differentiation techniques are used to achieve similar goals- moving student learning and understanding from where it is to where it needs to be. Therefore the two approaches may be blended together in some classrooms to the point of being indistinguishable. Scaffolding and differentiation are, however, distinct in several ways. Vygotsky suggests that there are two parts of a learner’s developmental level: the “actual developmental level” and the “potential developmental level”. Scaffolding refers to the use of tools or techniques to allow a child to achieve a goal that would otherwise be beyond his or her unassisted efforts (Wood, Bruner, & Ross, 1976).
